Part 1: Fear in its Element

SESSION 3

FEAR AND THE HEROIC JOURNEY

The Heroic Journey is a metaphor for human life. I can be divided into 4 phases:

Phase 1 – The ordinary life.

Phase 2 – Going on an adventure and searching for treasure.

Phase 3 – Finding treasure, recognising it, and realising how much work is involved in claiming it.

Phase 4 – The return journey.

Each of these 4 phases has its challenges, and fear is always part of the experience. The whole notion of being on a heroic journey is exciting and scary.

Why would you want to leave the safety of your ordinary life, set off on your own and put yourself at risk, following a call that only you can hear, and that might lead you into trouble?

What if it all turns out to be a ‘pie in the sky’?

What if you don’t find any treasure?

What if you find it, only to discover that you are not up to the challenge of bringing it home?

These are some of the big and difficult questions we are faced with on the heroic journey.

In this session we illustrate what the heroic journey might look like in real life. In particular, we explore where the popular aproach 'feel the fear and do it anyway', is applicable and where it isn't.
